Mersey Marauders win the GFSN Cup!
Mersey Marauders have completed an historic League and Cup double by edging out London Falcons in a thrilling GFSN Cup Final on Sunday at Hyde FC's Ewen Fields stadium.
Mersey showed great character to recover from a shaky start to level matters before half time courtesy of goals from Damo Mooney and Craig Wilson with the team having previously trailed by two goals to nil. A further Damo Mooney goal after the restart put Mersey in command before Falcons fought back with a goal of their own to leave the game tied at 3-3 at full-time.
A nerve-wracking period of extra time failed to provide further goals and so the tie was decided on penalties. Successful conversions from Damo Mooney and Neftali Gonzalez Vellido kept he tie in the balance at 2-2 after five penalties a piece before Antony Spencer coolly blasted home the winning penalty in a sudden death shoot out. Cue rapturous celebrations from the exuberant Mersey squad and its fantastic supporters... An unbelievable end to an incredible season!
Mersey Marauders continued their impressive run of form with a well-deserved 2-6 win over Birmingham Blaze on Sunday.Mersey quickly established a two goal lead thanks to a brace from Craig Wilson but could not put the game to bed despite enjoying overwhelming territorial advantage.After the break Birmingham capitalised on two rare Mersey defensive lapses to draw level but ultimately the Marauders’ superiority proved telling and two further goals apiece from John Appleton and Craig Wilson secured a decisive victory and cemented our place at the top of GFSN League Division Three.
An outstanding team performance saw the Mersey Marauders complete a 9-1 away day demolition of Wolverhampton Harts on Sunday. Goals from John Appleton, John Hamilton and Juan Carlos Rodriguez put Mersey 3-0 ahead at half time and whilst the hosts pulled a goal back early in the second half, further goals from John Hamilton, Neftali Gonzalez Vellido, Andy Kent, Craig Wilson and a brace from Damo Mooney completed the rout and returned the Marauders to the top of GFSN League Division Three. In emerging victorious against our friends from the Black Country the Marauders also won the Dennis Clements Cup which was presented to the team by our hosts after the game.
Mersey Marauders marched into the the quarter finals of the GFSN Cup with an impressive 5-1 win away to Leicester Wildecats on Sunday. Despite going a goal down early on Mersey showed real determination to battle back to lead 3-1 at the break courtesy of an own goal and a brace from Juan Carlos Rodriguez. The Marauders turned on the style in the second half and further goals came courtesy of Neftali Gonzalez Vellido and Bernie Gibson. The Mersey goal was seldom threatened and the scoreline undeniably reflected the Marauders' superiority on the day. Bring on the next round!
Mersey Marauders have enjoyed a successful weekend of football winning both games! Mersey played host to Village Manchester who were in Liverpool to play Saltire Thistle for the Caledonian Cup. Mersey won the game against Village Manchester on Saturday, beating them 3-0. Manchester’s first team went on to play Saltire Thistle for the cup, winning 3-0. Mersey were back again today to play Saltire Thistle for the Michael Causer Memorial Shield. Mersey finished on top where the final score was 6-2, with goals from Craig Wilson, Karl Wilson, Bernie and Juan Carlos. The Michael Causer Shield will be presented at Liverpool’s Masquerade bar today at 4pm.
